Before Your Appointment
You don't need to do a lot to prepare, but a few things help the process go smoother. Pick up toys, shoes, and small items from the floors being cleaned. If you have lightweight furniture — dining chairs, floor lamps, small side tables — moving them out of the way saves time. Heavy furniture like sofas and beds can stay where they are. I'll work around them and can place protective tabs under the legs to prevent any moisture transfer.
Give the carpeted areas a quick vacuum if you can. This picks up surface debris so the deep clean can focus on what's embedded in the fibers. Not a dealbreaker if you skip it, but it helps.
Point out any areas of concern before we start — pet stains, high-traffic lanes, anything you've tried to treat yourself. Knowing what I'm dealing with upfront means I can choose the right pre-treatment products from the start.
Step 1: The Walk-Through Inspection
Every job starts with a walk-through. I'll go room by room with you, checking carpet type, fiber condition, traffic patterns, and stain locations. This isn't just a formality — different carpet fibers (nylon, polyester, wool, olefin) respond differently to cleaning methods and temperatures. A wool rug that gets the same treatment as a nylon hallway runner could shrink or bleed color.
I'll also check for existing damage — fraying, delamination, or areas where the backing has separated. If there's a problem I can see before cleaning, I want you to know about it upfront so there are no surprises.
Step 2: Pre-Treatment
Problem areas get pre-treated with solutions matched to the type of stain. Pet stains get enzyme-based treatments that break down uric acid. Grease and oil stains get a different solvent. High-traffic lanes get a traffic lane pre-spray that loosens embedded soil. These products need a few minutes to dwell and do their work before the main cleaning begins.
For homes with pets, I use non-toxic, pet-safe pre-treatments. Your pets don't need to leave the house — I just ask that they stay off the wet carpet until it dries.
Step 3: Hot Water Extraction (The Deep Clean)
This is where the transformation happens. My truck-mounted system heats water to approximately 200°F and injects it deep into the carpet fibers under high pressure, then immediately extracts it — along with all the dirt, allergens, bacteria, and cleaning solution — back into the truck's waste tank.
The truck-mounted system is significantly more powerful than portable rental machines. Higher water temperature means better soil removal. Stronger suction means less moisture left behind, which translates to faster drying times. Nothing stays in your home — all the dirty water goes straight to the truck.
Step 4: Post-Clean and Optional Protection
After the main cleaning, I do a final pass over high-traffic areas and any spots that need extra attention. Then we do a walkthrough together so you can see the results and point out anything you want me to revisit.
This is also when I apply Scotchgard fabric protection if you've requested it. The protector goes on while the carpet is still slightly damp, which helps it bond evenly to the fibers. It creates an invisible barrier that makes future spills bead up on the surface instead of soaking in — giving you time to blot them up before they become stains.
After: Drying Time and Results
With our truck-mounted extraction, most carpets are safe to walk on within 30 minutes. They'll feel slightly damp to the touch but not wet. Full drying typically takes 4-6 hours depending on humidity, air circulation, and carpet thickness. Opening windows, running ceiling fans, or turning on the AC speeds this up considerably.
A few things to keep in mind after cleaning:
- Walk in clean socks or bare feet on the carpet for the first 24 hours — no shoes
- If furniture needs to go back on damp carpet, I'll place protective pads under the legs
- Avoid heavy foot traffic in the first few hours
- Some stains may reappear as the carpet dries (called "wicking") — this is normal with deep stains and usually resolves with a second treatment
How Long Do Results Last?
That depends on your household. In a home with no pets and light traffic, you'll see results lasting 12-18 months. With pets and kids, plan on 6-9 months before the next cleaning. Scotchgard protection extends the life of every cleaning by preventing soil from bonding to the fibers as quickly.
The biggest factor in how long your clean lasts isn't the cleaning itself — it's what happens at the front door. A good doormat and a shoes-off policy will do more for your carpets than anything else.
